Sustainable music festivals

This year was the 10th anniversary and since the beginning of Bahidorá Carnival there was a notion of being a sustainable event, starting with understanding its responsibility and impact on our environment.

We started the sustainability plan with waste collection and recycling strategies. Even in the first year, we had a call to action that we still remember with excitement. A moment when, on the main stage, we invited all participants to look around and collect waste in a collective effort. It was there that we got a small taste of what we can achieve as a community that cares about its environment.

During the second edition, we tested a comprehensive sustainability plan in which we measured our ecological footprint for the first time. It was a very relevant effort as it marked the starting point for continuous improvement. In addition, we understood the long and important road ahead to become a truly sustainable festival.

In 2018, we became the first Mexican and Latin American festival to obtain the Green Music Initiative label. Recognition from a German organization that rates and rewards sustainability strategies implemented by international festivals. This recognition not only showed us that we were on the right track, but also motivated us to continue, increase and improve our efforts.

Today, with pride and gratitude to our entire community, we can say that we are an increasingly conscious celebration that acts for its environment. Some of the most representative efforts of the sustainability plan are:

• Carbon neutral festival.

• Waste management plan.

• Design and construction with values.

• Linterna Forum.

• Conscious art exhibition.

In addition, this year the paradise surprised us with the arrival of a species of bat. So we joined the efforts to conserve the flora and fauna of Las Estacas (venue), by planning our spaces and experiences without affecting the special guest; the trumpeter bats.
